Coach-on-Coach Violence?

Tom Cable Oakland Raiders head coach punch

As always, craziness is going down with the Oakland Raiders. The players weren’t getting in trouble and Raiders Owner Al Davis was much quieter than usual so somebody had to step up, right?

According to FanHouse.com, first-year head coach Tom Cable punched defensive assistant Randy Hanson in the middle of a training camp practice. To quote Allen Iverson, “Practice? We talkin’ about practice?” Not a great start for a new head coach. The season hasn’t even started! Wait…did I really just write that a head coach punched another coach in a practice?

The Napa Police have commented that the matter is closed and that “the victim didn’t even want any police action taken.” They will not be pursuing any assault case. “It’s an eternal issue we are dealing with,” Cable told reporters. “That’s all I’m going to say.” I hope Al Davis also issues a statement because that will be funny.

People (as always) questioned Al Davis’ decision to hire Cable in the first place. Maybe he had to save some money for his inevitable lawsuit with former Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin and Cable was cheap? I have no idea, but everybody knows how well the Kiffin era ended.

Cable started his coaching career in 2000 as the head coach of the Idaho Vandals, which is where he spent his college playing days. With the Vandals, he went 11-35 in four years. His contract was not renewed in 2003, but by 2006 he had made it to the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. He was the offensive line coach under Jim Mora.

After one year in Atlanta, Cable began his tenure in Oakland. In 2007, he was hired on as the offensive line coach. After the whole fiasco with Kiffin, Cable was promoted as head coach of the Raiders on February 4, 2009.

As the O-Line coach, he has helped the Raiders finish 6th in rushing in 2007 & 10th in rushing in 2008. Now with Justin Fargas healthy, plus former #4-pick Darren McFadden and Michael Bush in their second year, this trio is looking to improve upon their impressive rushing yards last season of 853, 499, and 421, respectively. That should make things interesting in a relatively wide-open AFC West with the San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs.

A coach punches a coach after beating the Dallas Cowboys 31-10? Will LT & Merriman be Pro Bowlers again? What kind of start are a loss & 3 interceptions by Josh McDaniels & Kyle Orton? How will the Matt Cassell era begin without Tony Gonzalez? That is your AFC West…

I can’t wait for the real season to begin!
